JCSU has partnered with the American Heart Association to develop the Grow with the Green Fellowship, an intensive two-semester long program for students interested in community-based research, food security, and health and nutrition. During this program, Fellows develop research skills while implementing initiatives in the Historic West End to help increase food security.
The three goals of the Grow with the Green project are to 1) introduce food-related curriculum at Bruns Avenue Elementary School, 2) initiate a mobile farmer’s market, 3) expand production at Sustainability Village, and 4) implement a new farmer’s market. The program supports the mission of the university, which includes developing leaders with civic and social responsibility while recognizing the university’s own responsibility to the surrounding community. The program covers topics ranging from civic and democratic engagement to qualitative research methods. It supports the development of soft and hard skills to improve students’ employment prospects.
All majors are invited to apply, and the program is open to rising Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. A minimum GPA of 2.8 is required for eligibility. The fellowship is particularly suitable for individuals interested in social justice.
Fellows are selected on a competitive basis. As part of the agreement, scholars are required to participate in weekly trainings and meetings (depending on current circumstances, will be virtual), while implementing Grow with the Green initiatives. Grow with the Green Fellows must dedicate 5 hrs/week to these activities. For their participation, fellows receive a stipend of $1250/semester. Renewal of Fellowship status for the Spring semester is contingent upon satisfactory completion of the program during the Fall semester.
The deadline to apply for the 2020-21 Grow with the Green Fellowship is April 14, 2020.
