May 8, 2013, Charlotte, NC – Despite the wind and drizzle on Saturday, CMS students and families gathered on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) for MayFest, a day of family fun on May 4th. The day had a multi-faceted purpose; in addition to the family fun and games, Johnson C. Smith University’s Smith Institute for Applied Research faculty and students studied what factors contribute to increased parental engagement, and the connection between learning and play. (more…)

INDABA and Northwest Corridor Council of Elders

Indaba, or important gathering, is a community forum,

JCSU President Clarence D. Armbrister welcomes the Council of Elders to campus

common among African tribes. Johnson C. Smith University takes pride in hosting the Indaba where representatives from the neighborhoods and businesses in the Northwest Corridor, elected officials representing the area, and civic leaders throughout Charlotte all come together.  From this larger, community group a Northwest Corridor Council of Elders serves as the community resident leadership for the Indaba.

Held annually, the Indaba is a community planning day where 100+ residents are immersed in dialogue, sharing concerns and ideas on topics affecting the Northwest Corridor.  They hear local experts share their insights on economic development, land-use planning, education, small business development and community leadership.  To date, there have been seven Indabas hosted by the President’s Office and the Northwest Corridor Council of Elders.

Through a Smith Institute grant that Dr. Ruth Green received to mentor students in conducting research,  Horane Holgate received funding to present his work at the Southeastern Psychological Association’s Convention and Annual Meeting in Nashville and won one of three student regional awards at the conference.
