In 2009, Dr. Ronald Carter and Dr. Diane Bowles sought to develop an infrastructure for applied research on Johnson C. Smith University’s campus. The campus had a long history of community involvement, but their vision was to further that effort. Smith Institute for Applied Research was funded through a Department of Education Title III grant and initiated with four Centers of Excellence. That funding provided support for faculty members interested in pursuing pilot projects within the four Centers, as well as the MACMAS Lab. Most recently two centers were successfully institutionalized leaving the Center of Excellence in Diversity and Workforce Small Business Development and the Center of Excellence in Minority Health and Family Wellness.
