In the summer of 2011, Frank Parker, Dr. Barbara Edwards, and their team of researchers looked into incorporating the local talent hotbed of young jazz musicians into an applied research project. The research project is a testament to Johnson C. Smith University's commitment to undergraduate applied research extending beyond the walls of the university. Smith Institute for Applied Research at JCSU is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and funds faculty-mentored applied research for undergraduate students.
